Somalia: Explosions, gunfire rock Mogadishu

Three loud explosions and heavy gunfire have been heard in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, according to reports and an Al Jazeera correspondent.

Mohamed Hussein, police captain, said the blasts appeared to be suicide bombs that were detonated near the wall of the popular Sahafi Hotel, which is close to the Somali Police Force’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

“The blasts targeted Hotel Sahafi which is just opposite the CID,” he told Reuters news agency.

Videos posted on social media showed plumes of smoke rising from the scene.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The al-Shabab armed group has been carrying out frequent attacks in the Somali capital in its bid to topple the country’s internationally recognised government.
